About us

At Carbon Removal Canada, we’re here to help Canada lead the world in permanent carbon removal – because reducing carbon emissions alone isn’t enough. We need to clean up the carbon that’s already in the atmosphere, and Canada has everything it takes to be a global leader: the talent, resources, and entrepreneurial drive.

We’re an independent non-profit, but operate like a startup. We shape impactful policies that scale innovative technologies to combat climate change and drive economic growth. In the past year alone, we’ve helped shape transformative national programs to buy carbon removal credits, fund technological innovation, and bring carbon removal into Canada’s core climate strategy. As an independent and trusted actor in the industry – we serve as a connector and catalyst that brings together stakeholders across the ecosystem to turn big ideas into tangible outcomes.

As the carbon removal sector grows, we're positioned to expand our influence and impact in shaping Canada's climate technology leadership role on the global stage.

The role

As Chief of Staff at Carbon Removal Canada, you’ll be the strategic partner to our Executive Director. This is a role with real ownership – a chance to help shape a fast-growing climate organization at a critical moment.

You will be working on everything from high-stakes fundraising and partner relationships to internal strategy and operations. Some days you will be deep on board prep or budget planning, others you will be running point on day-to-day operational needs. You will need to be just as comfortable working behind the scenes as stepping up to lead.

This is a fixed term position (16-18 months to start) and is a career-defining opportunity to significantly shape a nimble, mission-driven organization at a critical growth stage. As Carbon Removal Canada and the broader carbon removal sector expand, this role has strong potential to evolve into a permanent leadership position.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Partner with the Executive Director to implement and refine organizational strategy through data-driven analysis, industry insights, and strategic foresight
  • Funding & Development: Lead our fundraising strategy to drive organizational growth—including maintaining funder relationship systems, managing grant reporting, developing compelling materials, conducting donor meetings, and identifying emerging opportunities across Canada's climate funding landscape
  • Organizational Operations: Own strategic planning, budgeting, and operational processes while contributing to internal process improvements and improving how we work to keep the running smoothly
  • Board Management: Coordinate engagement with the Board of Directors, including meeting preparation, materials development, and ensuring strategic alignment
  • Initiative Oversight: Manage key organizational initiatives from conception to completion, ensuring alignment with our mission and strategic goals

What You Bring

You're a high-performing professional who blends strategic vision with hands-on execution. With analytical capabilities developed in demanding environments like consulting or startups, you're driven to apply your talents to climate action. You navigate seamlessly between high-level strategy and detailed implementation, building relationships across diverse stakeholders and transforming complex data into actionable results.

This role offers the perfect intersection of career acceleration and meaningful impact for a candidate who brings:

  • 5+ years of work experience in high-performance, fast-paced, outcomes-oriented environments
  • Business development, fundraising, or grant/customer management expertise with a track record of building productive relationships
  • Outstanding organizational capabilities and project management expertise in fast-paced settings
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills with ability to engage effectively with high-level stakeholders
  • Strong analytical thinking paired with the ability to translate complex information into actionable strategies
  • Versatility to work independently while navigating between strategic priorities and detailed execution
  • Bonus if you have French, climate policy or public policy/advocacy expertise

Join us to apply your talents to one of today's most urgent global challenges while defining the next phase of your professional journey.

How We Work

  • Remote-first: Carbon Removal Canada operates as a remote-first organization, with this position following a flexible hybrid model. You can work anywhere in Canada and will collaborate virtually with our distributed team while meeting in-person with the Executive Director in Toronto at least monthly.
  • Outcomes-driven: We typically work standard hours (9AM to 5PM EST), but are much more concerned about results and getting things done effectively than we are about what hours you work.
  • Quarterly team retreats: We hold in-person full team meetings and retreats quarterly to collaborate in person. Additional ad-hoc meetings may be necessary where in-person collaboration is preferable. Senior staff should be ready to travel to events representing the organization as needed.
